The second Sunday of May is celebrated throughout the country as Mother’s Day. However, in Boston, the second Sunday in May is known as Lilac Sunday, when thousands flock to Bussey Hill at the Arnold Arboretum to revel in the sight and fragrance of the nearly 400 specimens, representing 179 different kinds of lilac that burst into bloom at this time. Since 1908, locals have been bringing their mothers on this special day, dedicated to her and the lovely, sacred lilac, to stroll the paths and picnic on the vernal lawns. Lilacs boast lush, upright panicles of small flowers ranging in color from pure white, to the deepest of dark purple and every shade in between. A flower so beautiful, and aroma so intoxicating, that even the most conservative, law- abiding folk, could be compelled to veer off the road, jump out of their vehicles, to steal a few blooms from an unsuspecting neighbor, who tempted fate by planting and flaunting their coveted lilacs so close to the road.
